Mentorship

Opening the door to science for the next generation.

Mentorship is the center of Dr. Garcia's work. He founded and directed DORSAL, a summer research program that brings students into real orthopedic research, and created the Rhode to Medicine and Made in Central Falls seminar series to open paths into science and medicine for students from his own community.

By his own count he has mentored hundreds of trainees across every level, from high school through faculty, and helped many of them go on to become physicians and scientists. He serves the American Society for Microbiology on its Nominating and Appointments Committee and as a liaison to the American Academy of Microbiology, and was an inaugural member of the society's standing committee on inclusive and equitable science.
