From Central Falls to the laboratory, and back to the community that raised him.

Dioscaris R. Garcia was born in the Dominican Republic and spent his earliest years with his grandparents, who taught him about plants, soil, and the natural world. He immigrated to the United States at eleven and made his home in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

He studied microbiology, with a minor in chemistry, at the University of Rhode Island, then earned his PhD in molecular pharmacology and physiology at Brown University. His work now spans three worlds that rarely sit together: the research laboratory, the mentorship of young scientists, and the civic life of his state.

In Rhode Island he is known as a scientist who can translate difficult science into plain language, and as a leader who shows up for the people around him.
